The White Countess, Eight Below, Joyful Noise and Haywire

Okay folks  - it's time fo rme to report on my last weeks movie watching activities. First of all: ******Spoiler Alert*******Spoiler Alert*****
There - you have all been warned. Any and all of my posts may contain movie spoilers. I generally won't reveal key plot points but I cannot make any promises. So my advice is if you haven't seen the movie yet and want to without any previous information tainting the movie watching experience don't read my posts until after you have seen the movie.

So - here are the movies I watched in the last week and my commentary on them:

1. The White Countess - (2005) Slow movie as all Ralph Fiennes movies tend to be. Also co-stars the late Natasha Richardson. Some vague Russian royalty history. Based in Shanghai. Not much else to say about this one.

2. Eight Below - (2006) NOT a movie for dog lovers. I bawled my baby blue eyes out through half the movie and I'm pretty sure I hated every character in that movie by the end. (except maybe Jason Biggs cause he's just too goofy to hate really)

3. Joyful Noise - (2012) Perfect movie if you want to turn your brain off and cruise through a religiously themed romantic comedy. It's good to see Dolly Parton in a movie again but at the same time boggles the mind how they got her into some of those outfits.....painted them on her maybe??? Also I hate it when there are such obvious anomalies as a church choir from a town suffering from economic depression that spends half the movie complaining about budget and not being able to afford future competitions staying in a Wyndham hotel....pretty sure there are cheaper hotels in Los Angeles - Just sayin!

4. Haywire - (2011) Okay so here's the one most of you have probably been looking forward to and so here are my thoughts on strange stuff in this movie. First of all....the soundtrack. Was it meant to dredge up old memories of 1970's Charlie's Angels TV episodes? I also found it rather disturbing that there seemed to be music in parts of the movie where it was NOT appropriate and no music where perhaps it would have been appropriate....say during the fight scenes? I have to let them off the hook a little on this aspect though as I suspect it was to highlight the fighting ability of one Gina Carano who in case you missed it is an actual MMA fighter in real life so yep - most of those moves were really hers! Hurray for butt kicking chicks! :) (It surprises and pleases me even more that she is rather attractive and can actually act.) The pronounced lack of music throughout seemed to produce a bit of an anticlimatic effect for me however which I suspect was NOT the directors intention.
Second - I have to pick on the dad. If I remember correctly he was also an ex-marine or military man of some sort yet when his daughter was getting her butt kicked right under his nose he stood around passively like he had no idea how to engage in combat.....seems inconsistent. But then again action movies are never known for their characters consistent ability to injure or be injured. She can get the living daylights knocked out of her in the hotel room and recover like she's hardly been touched but when she falls a few feet onto a roof ledge she is walking with a pronounced limp for the next stretch of her journey. Also she has a broken arm at one point that prevents her from taking a drink of water from a bottle on her own but a few minutes later she has it thrown up over the back of the seat so she can twist herself around and navigate the vehicle backwards.
So those were the major points. There was a minor inconsistency with her hairstyle moving around in a few scenes and of course the underlying message that you should never trust or work with the government especially in high risk jobs, but overall I would say if you like action movies - go ahead and see this one!

Feel free to leave comments and feedback - have a great day everyone!
