“TO BE OR NOT TO BE”

MOVIE LOVERS ANONYMOUS
“TO BE OR NOT TO BE”
The movie industry has changed the world. A common and obvious statement that makes, even the most eloquent person look foolish, but what does it mean?
Hollywood has become not only a place, but an industry, an empire, a lifestyle. Children grow up and instead of playing outside and dreaming of their own alternate reality, they watch one unfold in the latest blockbuster hit. After decades of Academy Awards, technological advances, and bigger storylines, children, and adults, can indulge in a fantasy, and for two hours, become part of an alternate reality.
Everyone has their favorite movie, whether it’s romantic, action, comedy, and with the favorite movie, comes the favored role. “If you could be anyone in any role, which would you choose?”
A poll was taken on the favored Facebook site, “Movie Loverz.” Surprisingly enough, women wanted to be the damsel in distress that ends up with the beautifully poetic and artificially sculpted man. The men, an action hero, or even the favored comedic role that leaves the audience either in pain, or running to the bathroom.
Should there be concern for the dream of being in a specific role? Is there anything wrong with dreaming of being the next Meg Ryan in a movie like “Sleepless in Seattle,” or to be as funny as Will Ferrell in the next big comedy.
The movie industry has changed the world, but more importantly, the movie industry has changed people. The thing to remember is, if you desire that one role that captures your heart, or makes you laugh, makes you cry, or even allows you to fall in love, find in real life, and be the person you have always wanted to be, even just for a day. Because, we really are just children playing dress up in the real world, might as well enjoy the role.

Hunger Games, Mirror Mirror, The Rum Diary

The Hunger Games - Yes I went and saw it - no I am not going to criticize it. I don't want hoards of fans descending upon me in a violent rage. If you read the books and liked them you will likely enjoy the movie. Even if you didn't read the books you'll still know and understand what is going on and probably enjoy the movie if action/adventure mixed with a little romance is your movie style.

****Spoiler Alert***

Mirror Mirror - My 13 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed this movie. There were a couple of innuendo's but pretty mild that most younger kids wouldn't pick up on. It's geared more towards kids so probably won't be first pick for a date night or a group of adults to go see but not so kid oriented that it's not enjoyable to go watch with your kids if you have them. It's a little campy and utterly predictable but how would a movie based on the popular Snow White story not be? I wasn't very happy with how they took out the poison apple part and negated the whole need for the prince to come revive her but they did throw in a fun twist on that portion of the fairy tale at the end of the movie.

The Rum Diary - UGH! Not every human interest story is interesting to human beings. This was the slowest, stupidest, most boring movie I have watched in a long time (The Tree of Life is an exception as I don't think any movie will ever top that one for pointlessness.) I was angry and felt like I had wasted two hours of my life after watching this movie. Not even the energy of Johnny Depp was saving this one. I am shocked and surprised he even agreed to take this role. I guess it was an easy paycheck for him since all he had to do was play a less wobbly, less dirty version of Jack Sparrow. The only bright spot of talent and entertainment was Giovanni Ribisi playing Moberg. All I can say is that guy is brilliant and sadly underrated. None of the jokes, or so called situational comedy was funny or entertaining and the movie ends at a really weird drop off point with a quick couple of sentences explaining the aftermath. Not a movie I would recommend anyone waste their time on.

21 Jump Street

21 Jump Street - If you don't mind a little crude and sexual humor then I would totally recommend this movie. It was fun, well acted (for Channing Tatum that is) and funny! They also have a fun surprise for you at the end. I don't know if I just have a soft spot for movies based on TV shows aired while I was growing up or if this movie actually was that good, but I enjoyed every minute of it, sometimes even laughing out loud because it was so funny. I've always been on the fence about Jonah Hill's acting abilities but after seeing this one at least I can say he isn't afraid to make a fool of himself while he is entertaining people, and that I can admire. I also have to give him mad props for his weight loss - he looks great in this movie! They did a great job of keeping you guessing at who the bad guy was. I have seen so many movies that often by 30 minutes into it I can tell you who the culprit is etc. etc. but I was really surprised when they finally divulged who was behind everything in this movie. I honestly had no complaints about this one - wouldn't recommend taking kids under 18 with you though. It's pretty crude.

A Thousand Words

A Thousand Words - First of all....isn't Eddie Murphy supposed to be funny? In this movie he is far from it! I thought I was going to a comedy and was sorely disappointed. Second of all do we now have to have a token nerdy fat kid AKA some version of Jonah Hill in every movie? That kid was not even remotely entertaining, let alone funny. Third do I need to point out the obvious? Every trailer shows Eddie Murphy using his wiles to skip the line at Starbucks by faking a phone call that his wife is in labor....when the burly construction guys at the front aren't going for it he yells in surprise "Twins!" Who in the developed world nowadays does not know whether or not they are having twins BEFORE being wheeled into labor and delivery? The chances are pretty slim. Word must have gotten out that this movie was pretty much crap from start to finish cause it's certainly flopped in box office sales. I would NOT recommend going to see this one - even for the sake of the kiddoes.

The Lorax and The Secret World of Arrietty

Dr. Seuss: The Lorax - Of all the Dr. Seuss  movies I have ever seen this is the only one that I have actually enjoyed. Oftentimes they get so caught up in the rhyming that the storyline doesn't make sense. Not so with this one. However if you are a conspicuous consumer and don't like being reminded that we are taking advantage of and destroying this planet we live on - maybe better to skip this one. I was impressed that they actually took an environmental stand and addressed an important issue in not only a way that the adult could appreciate but that I think kids can understand as well. It was obviously against big business (was I the only one thinking gee - this sounds/looks alot like Walmart throughout the entire movie?) and after the movie I totally wanted to go plant a tree! haha!

The Secret World of Arrietty - I have never been a big fan of Japanese animation films however this one was pretty good. It had an interesting storyline, and some humor in it. The kids thought it was great and as an adult - it was fairly enjoyable to sit through. No major complaints about this one, but no accolades either.

Hugo

Hugo - This was a bit slow to get started but in the end turned out to be a great movie. If you are a movie nerd like me I would totally recommend it. You'll love how they get into some of the history and development of movies in an entertaining fashion. I can totally see why this movie was nominated for so many awards and won 5. I even teared up a little towards the end. The kids weren't great actors but we can always count on Ben Kingsley and Christopher Lee to carry a movie. Other than the subpar acting of the children I really can't say much negative about this movie! :)

J. Edgar

J. Edgar -  Alot of people were surprised that this one got snubbed by the Academy, however after having seen it, I am not the least bit surprised. The makeup was poorly done, Leonardo DiCaprio's accent was over exaggeraged, and the story line was not only hard to follow but spent too much time focusing on what he said he did as opposed to what really happened. Although overall it was a really interesting movie to watch I was disappointed that they spend so much time on J. Edgar's fabrication of his role in certain events and only about 30 seconds at the end clearing up the fact that his ACTUAL role in alot of those events was much different.

The Tree of Life

The Tree of  Life - OH MY WORD! What a complete waste of two hours and twenty minutes. I watched this one on DVD at home with my boyfriend and we both agreed that had we actually paid money to watch it in a theatre we would have been LIVID! I get existentialism and I get that not every movie should always answer every question and some things can be left to the imagination but seriously....SERIOUSLY!?! This movie had NO storyline and over 1/3 of it was just pictures of scenery - we think maybe depicting the evolution of the earth since the beginning of time. Really - if anyone has any idea what this movie was supposed to be about please let me know becuase I watched the whole thing and I have no idea what they were trying to accomplish in the making of this movie. Oh yeah - and I seriously don't buy it that the grown son of Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain would end up looking like Sean Penn. Horrible casting choice!

Midnight in Paris

Okay so I watched this movie a while ago in anticipation of the Academy Awards and then totally forgot to blog about it - yeah it was THAT memorable (sarcasm intended)
Midnight in Paris - It was a good unique idea for a story line - very poorly executed. They just tried to do way too much with way too little time. They needed to cut it down to one era or fewer well known people within each era. It just got confusing trying to keep track of everyone and there was so little depth to each of the characters that I couldn't bring myself to care about any of them. I get the concept that suddenly finding yourself immersed in the worlds of all the people you admire the most would be fascinating but it was still too much with too little time and instead of reveling in the fascination I felt it landed flat on it's face. I have no idea why this movie was nominated for any Academy Awards other than that the costume design WAS pretty good. The two main characters? Completely unlikable. As much as I love Rachel McAdams her character was completely selfish, snotty and deplorable which is what I believe the director was aiming for so good job there. Owen Wilson - another favorite but whoever met such an inconstant character? First he's completely in love with his fiance, next suddenly some random artist's muse from the 20's and third times a charm he walks off into the sunset with yet another love interest at the end of the movie. Watch out for that guy! Blech!!!

Unicorn City

So yeah - this is totally geared towards a niche audience so if you are not a gamer or do not know gamers you will likely be totally lost. I wasn't sure if I was actually laughing at what was happening in the movie or laughing at funny memories hanging out with my geek gamer friends ten years ago. I would have passed on this movie altogether if my daughter hadn't wanted to see it so bad....I worry for her. Since this was an independent local film I am going to post the trailer for those of you who may not have heard of it:
Also here is an article about the movie - kinda cool that it was produced by a film company from Utah. :)

Academy Award Update

So....I did horribly on guessing the Academy Award winners. I only got Music (Original Score) , Visual Effects, Costume Design, Directing, and Best Picture correct. Two of the picks I had down for SHOULD win  DID win yay! Writing (Adapted Screenplay), and Animated Feature film. Considering I hadn't seen most of the nominated films this year I feel I did okay. Last year I had seen all but two of the films and I accurately guessed all but two of the winners so that's probably a pretty good ratio. Anyway...another movie related blogpost coming soon. Unicorn City! :)

Moneyball, Contagion, Ghost Rider 2, This Means War

Moneyball - Okay so this one is up for a few Academy Awards. best picture, best actor in a leading role, best actor in a supporting role, film editing, sound mixing, and writing (adapted screenplay). I am not going to pretend I know enough about the technical categories to make any commentary there...but as for the first three awards? Okay it was a somewhat interesting storyline. Seemed to be in the fashion of Clint Eastwood films - SLOW! I hardly think this will make it for best picture, the academy likes serious films but generally they don't cross over to the boring...I could be wrong. I guess we'll find out on Sunday. Also as for the two acting roles up for awards? I am not entirely sure Brad Pitt or Jonah Hill either one were acting in this film. You can't nominate Jonah for an award solely based on the fact that this is his only semi-serious not bordering on the ridiculous role - ever. Brad's character was just a normal working class guy trying to do something out of the ordinary which happens every day. So I guess if you consider that in real life Brad Pitt is a multi-millionaire and not an average everyday guy at all then okay he was acting...but that still doesn't mean his performance was anything riveting or award worthy. As far as the film itself on a non-award consideration level...what was with that random scene where he goes to pick up his daughter and sits awkwardly in the living room with his ex-wife and her new husband for 5 minutes....couldn't that have been edited out and saved us a few minutes in an already too long film? Plus if they had taken that out they could have saved some budget money and not had to pay Robin Wright for her appearance in the movie. Any woman's voice could have been used later in the film for her tide turning phone call that encouraged him to go watch the 21st game. Seriously - she did not need to be in that movie....such a weird casting choice.

Contagion - Well  - the story has been done a billion times. It was an interesting movie overall but too many storylines with not enough follow up to completion on any of them. Did they even make up the money they paid all those big name actors in box office sales??? Why did any of them agree to do that movie? It was an easy paycheck I guess. Thank goodness for overly dedicated scientists that are willing to try out vaccines on themselves. Everybody wash and sanitize your hands alot while traveling - that's all I have to say about this movie.

Ghost Rider 2 -  First of all I LOVE Nicolas Cage and in my mind he is probably the only actor quirky enough to pull off the cheesy character of Johnny Blaze and not make you want to punch him in the face every time he opens his mouth. I understand that the whole premise of the movie is over the top, cheesiness and camp, but without Cage it would be wholly intolerable. Other than being a pretty face I don't see Violante Placido making it into mainstream movies or high in demand for female lead characters, and thank goodness they didn't try to force too much of a relationship element between her and Nicolas Cage! If you liked the first movie you will like this one as well. If you are not a comic book fan, or don't understand the background story on Ghost Rider you will likely not enjoy this movie. Oh - and if you have ever seen The Prophecy 3: The Ascent you've pretty much already seen this movie.

This Means War  - So - once again Hollywood thanks for setting women's lib back ten years....okay maybe 5. But men wonder why the nice guy never wins - this movie pretty much sets up that dynamic again perfectly. I am still wondering why because Reese Witherspoon's character certainly never gives any legitimate reason for her decision but she chooses the myoginistic, cocky, take the girl for granted, playboy character over the sincere, better looking (in my opinion) courteous, gentleman. I get so tired of Hollywood trying to make us believe that if we as women are just as amazing, beautiful and have a great personality like Reese's character we're going to turn that bad boy around - dream on! Okay so we can pretend that both those guys wouldn't have gotten totally fired for the first crazy antic they pulled on the other guy, but that whole scene where they sneak into her house to investigate her interests while she is dancing around apparently oblivious....c'mon! I would have noticed those guys in my house the first time they crawled behind a couch or jumped up against a wall. Did anyone else notice how all the information their spy teams gave them was in direct correlation to the items they had already noticed in her house? Couuldn't the script writers come up with some original information to throw in there for the teams to supply? Maybe they just got their film sequencing out of order but it was weird. Okay so I totally liked this movie but once again it's one of those rom-coms that you just have to turn off your brain and sit through it on cruise control otherwise it;s utterly perturbing. Tom Hardy = super yummy. Chris Pine = furry man

Drive, 50/50, The Vow, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,

Drive - What exactly was this movie trying to accomplish? I have to say first of all being a dedicated Camaro owner I was disappointed in their choice of car to epitomize this movie. Second of all - where was all the driving? I think the entire movie consisted of silent stares/ awkward exchanges (approx. 114 minutes) and driving (approx. 6 minutes) I'm not sure existentialism and adrenaline fueled movies mesh very well. Being a fairly dedicated fan of Ryan Gosling and the enormous talent he shows the potential to express I was epically disappointed in this movie overall.
50/50 - In contrast to the movie above, this movie was one of the best I have seen in YEARS!! It was funny,  touching, honest, and thoroughly entertaining. I honestly could not find anything to critique about this movie. Now a word to the conservative, there is some sexual talk and some language in it, but considering it's Seth Rogen and how entirely offensive he has the potential to be he was actually very mild in this movie and I think the rest of the posiitve aspects about it more than make up for his occassional inappropriate comment/discussion. Focus on the amazing journey that Adam (Played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) goes through and the up and coming talent that Anna Kendrick is displaying and you should be very impressed by this movie.
******SPOILER ALERT****The Vow - I can't pick on this movie very much because I love Rachel McAdams too much. I can ask however, why do they keep giving Channing Tatum acting roles? Newsflash - He can't act! (And no his appearance does not make up for that fact.) I was not even close to convinced at any point in time during this movie that he was crazy in love with his wife. I also think the whole premise of "The Vow" was destroyed when he actually gave up and proceeded with the divorce. Did that suck the romance out of the entire movie for anyone other than me?
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - So I got sucked into this one because I have a 12 year old daughter and my boyfriend has a 9 year old son. Guiltily I also have to admit I gave into the opportunity to stare at The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) for two hours as well. This movie is exactly what you would expect from a kids movie, cheesy, overdone on the special effects and incredibly brilliant (completely sarcastic of course) dialog such as: "Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...The Mysterious Island." Immediately followed by the character standing completely within earshot of quoted comment saying "Where are we?" really?!?!?! Didn't they just tell you they were on the Mysterious Island??? Your kids will love it - most adults will suffer through it. Another actor that they really need to stop giving acting roles to....Josh Hutcherson....I was soooo excited for the Hunger Games until I found out he had a leading role in it.... :( Thank goodness for long time actor Luis Guzman for some entertaining comical relief. He can always use more recognition for his acting talent.
Moneyball and Contagion coming up!!

One for the Money and Anonymous

I got out to two movies this last week. I went and saw One for the Money just for kicks and giggles. I also saw Anonymous - partly because I saw the preview and thought it looked really interesting and partly because it is nominated for an Academy award. So - here's my take on each movie:

One for the Money - I am still trying to figure out why Katherine Heigl or any self respecting woman for that matter would take on the role of Stephanie Plum. The fact that the book on which the movie was based on was written by a woman goes to further baffle me. The role of Stephanie Plum was the most outwardly degrading role towards women that I have seen in a LONG time! Either Katherine Heigl got a boob job for the movie or they were doing some pretty nifty camera tricks. The entire movie sexualized and objectified her character and she never even seemed offended when the two main male characters in the movie continually insisted on calling her misogynistic nicknames like "cupcake"

I am saddened to realize that we still live in a society so completely degrading towards women. After all - no smart, capable woman would ever choose to be bounty hunter because that's a mans job and she would much rather be selling lingerie in a department store right? This movie makes it abundantly clear that Stephanie Plum only chose to be a bounty hunter out of desperation and only lived to see the end of the movie out of sheer luck and brazen stupidity. I mean  - who else gets handcuffed to a tension rod for a shower curtain and instead of just pulling the rod down and reattaching it after sliding off the cuffs needs to call a man to come "rescue" her? The only saving grace I can give this movie is that at least when they gave the men Katherine Heigl's enhanced chest to ogle they threw in some male eye candy for the girls to appreciate as well. Thank goodness for Daniel Sunjata!

Anonymous - Since this movie didn't get very good marketing I have included the trailer so you can understand the premise. Also pay close attention to the costumes as this movie is up for an Academy Award for best costume design. I honestly thought it should have been up for best original screenplay as well. It was hard to keep facts seperated from speculation in this excellently written proposal of history. I am always fascinated by anything to do with the Tudor era and so this movie had me entranced from start to finish. The acting was well done, the story was intriguing and if you took every piece of information in it proposed as fact you would be utterly convinced that Shakespeare was not only a complete fraud but a buffoon as well. A Shining performance by Rhys Ifans who took on a role completely outside anything he has attempted before and did an outstanding job - keep an eye on him for great things to come. All around a great movie and I trully could not find much of anything to pick on so I will just leave it at the comments made and off I go to watch another movie!!!

Okay so here's a direct link to the list of nominees....I have alot of movie watching to do before I can decide who I think will win. This is unusual for me since usually by the time the release the nominees I have seen about 90% of the movies already. I'm not keeping up on my movie watching.....maybe it has something to do with an excess of school work to do.....hmmmm. ;)

http://oscar.go.com/nominees

Here are the movies I have seen: The Help, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Bridesmaids, Warrior, Rango, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Jane Eyre, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Real Steel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Ides of March

The White Countess, Eight Below, Joyful Noise and Haywire

Okay folks  - it's time fo rme to report on my last weeks movie watching activities. First of all: ******Spoiler Alert*******Spoiler Alert*****
There - you have all been warned. Any and all of my posts may contain movie spoilers. I generally won't reveal key plot points but I cannot make any promises. So my advice is if you haven't seen the movie yet and want to without any previous information tainting the movie watching experience don't read my posts until after you have seen the movie.

So - here are the movies I watched in the last week and my commentary on them:

1. The White Countess - (2005) Slow movie as all Ralph Fiennes movies tend to be. Also co-stars the late Natasha Richardson. Some vague Russian royalty history. Based in Shanghai. Not much else to say about this one.

2. Eight Below - (2006) NOT a movie for dog lovers. I bawled my baby blue eyes out through half the movie and I'm pretty sure I hated every character in that movie by the end. (except maybe Jason Biggs cause he's just too goofy to hate really)

3. Joyful Noise - (2012) Perfect movie if you want to turn your brain off and cruise through a religiously themed romantic comedy. It's good to see Dolly Parton in a movie again but at the same time boggles the mind how they got her into some of those outfits.....painted them on her maybe??? Also I hate it when there are such obvious anomalies as a church choir from a town suffering from economic depression that spends half the movie complaining about budget and not being able to afford future competitions staying in a Wyndham hotel....pretty sure there are cheaper hotels in Los Angeles - Just sayin!

4. Haywire - (2011) Okay so here's the one most of you have probably been looking forward to and so here are my thoughts on strange stuff in this movie. First of all....the soundtrack. Was it meant to dredge up old memories of 1970's Charlie's Angels TV episodes? I also found it rather disturbing that there seemed to be music in parts of the movie where it was NOT appropriate and no music where perhaps it would have been appropriate....say during the fight scenes? I have to let them off the hook a little on this aspect though as I suspect it was to highlight the fighting ability of one Gina Carano who in case you missed it is an actual MMA fighter in real life so yep - most of those moves were really hers! Hurray for butt kicking chicks! :) (It surprises and pleases me even more that she is rather attractive and can actually act.) The pronounced lack of music throughout seemed to produce a bit of an anticlimatic effect for me however which I suspect was NOT the directors intention.
Second - I have to pick on the dad. If I remember correctly he was also an ex-marine or military man of some sort yet when his daughter was getting her butt kicked right under his nose he stood around passively like he had no idea how to engage in combat.....seems inconsistent. But then again action movies are never known for their characters consistent ability to injure or be injured. She can get the living daylights knocked out of her in the hotel room and recover like she's hardly been touched but when she falls a few feet onto a roof ledge she is walking with a pronounced limp for the next stretch of her journey. Also she has a broken arm at one point that prevents her from taking a drink of water from a bottle on her own but a few minutes later she has it thrown up over the back of the seat so she can twist herself around and navigate the vehicle backwards.
So those were the major points. There was a minor inconsistency with her hairstyle moving around in a few scenes and of course the underlying message that you should never trust or work with the government especially in high risk jobs, but overall I would say if you like action movies - go ahead and see this one!

Feel free to leave comments and feedback - have a great day everyone!

Introduction

So you know as you sit and watch  a movie you notice something out of place, or you want to yell at the characters for doing stupid things, or the movie is just plain terrible? Well this is what my blog is about. I am going to choose a different movie (or 2) each week and write about all those little annoying things that the movie industry does to our movies and we basically just have to sit back and take it as their form of spoon-fed mindless entertainment. Oh yeah - I am going to blog in a few days about the Academy awards as well....cause how can we talk about movies and ignore the awards cermonies. I'll be posting my picks for winners then we can compare and see how well I did. The true to test to find out if I am a movie buff or not!

Welcome to my blog! Please let me know if you have a particular movie you would like torn to shreds. (This gives me a really good excuse to go see a couple new movies every weekend cause who wants to read me blog about old movies right?)
